If Artists Ran the Media is a collective show of artists' commentary on the slanted media outlets Americans are continually exposed to. The exhibition was inspired by a deep concern for the millennial generation's apparent apathy and unquestioning stance toward this dilemma. Our society is incessantly bombarded by countless versions of reality represented as the "news" and "status quo" by way of advertisements, corporate and politically run news stations, radio broadcasts and internet blogs. It seems that every interest group has its vehicle to inundate the American public with their perspective, from the Republican-owned Fox News Corporation to the left-leaning The Nation, no matter how conveniently manipulated to fit their own agenda. So I ask, why not give our artists a similar platform from which to further explore and distinguish these said truths from reality?
If Artists Ran the Media gives local and national artists the opportunity to run the media, if only from December 3, 2008- February 20, 2009. Through painting, illustration, photography, poetry, video, sculpture and multimedia installation, the exhibition gives both the viewer and artist an opportunity to critically assess the "truth" in a society dominated by corporate-run, partisan-heavy, and politically biased media outlets.
